To celebrate Book Week the Prep - 2s dressed up as book characters on Thursday. Unfortunately we weren't able to have a parade outside with the other Neighbourhoods due to the rain. There was a real buzz in the air as the children excitedly guessed each others characters and got into character. After some sharing within the Neighbourhood we visited the Preps and Year 1s in the red brick building for some shared reading.

Premier's Reading Challenge Deadline
Hi everyone,
Congratulations to those of you who have already finished the Premier’s Reading Challenge and have entered their books online. The deadline is fast approaching. You still have time to finish reading and enter your books online.
What you must do now: You have two more weeks to enter your books online. You must print out your book list, have a guardian sign it, and then give it to your home group teacher by Tuesday 8th September.
What we will do: One of your teachers will verify your books online to say you have met the challenge. The certificates will be awarded in Term 4.
If you have trouble logging on please let one of your teachers know as soon as possible.
Thanks!
Simone and Robert

Enviroweek August 30-Sept 5
The Nature project group have been working on a plan to get the nest boxes that we built last year into trees around our school. We have designed ways we think they could be installed safely, researched nest box installation recommendations and explored what kind of trees around our school would be most suitable.
Matt (Zac Mile's dad) worked with the children last year to build the boxes and he is happy to help us install them. He has a 6m ladder and some ideas himself but we will need more help!
If you can help us with ideas for how we can get nest boxes high up in the trees or if you have any experience with nest boxes WE NEED YOU. If you can help on the day of installation (day to be advised) then let Simone know.
If you have any other ideas for Enviroweek that you would like to share with the children (maybe you work in an area related to sustainability or the environment or maybe you have a fun activity to help us learn more about the environment) then please let us know!

Science Week in Year 2
This week was National Science week and our Art Studio became a Science Lab.
The Year 2 Neighbourhood was lucky enough to have three scientists come and share some of their knowledge with us. Thank you Carlos, Sandra and Daniel!
In the science lab a number of experiments took place, some are outlined below. The children wrote hypotheses to explain what they believed the science was behind the experiment.
Creating a storm: We observed the impact of detergent on milk.
Aluminum & Tin Can Races with Balloons: We observed how static electricity can pull an aluminum can and a tin can. We also timed the the races and compared the times.
Tricky Picture: We created an optical illusion by making a toy called a thaumatrope.

Relaxation
On Monday we in began to inquire into the benefits of relaxation and meditation. Our provocation was a TedTalk delivered by Andy Puddicombe.
We talked about the benefits of relaxation and came up with some ideas about how you can achieve a meditative state.
How do you relax at home? Share with us in the comments.

Measurement: Length
Over the last few weeks in Mathematics we explored length as a component of measurement. We began our investigations into dimensions, taking time to observe the width, height and depth of various items within our local environment. We noted that length was the distance between two points and that using the metric system most of the things could be measured using millimetres, centimetres, and metres. We used a range of measuring tools, including rulers, tape measures and string.
This week we used our skills in measurement to make towers with the exact height of 55cm. Here are some photos of our proud architects...
What's the height of the tallest tower you've been in? Share with us in the comments below.

Collecting Soft Drink Cans
The Year 2 Neighbourhood will be conducting a variety of experiments next week as part of Science Week. For one of the experiments we require empty soft drink cans. If you have any empty, uncrushed soft drink cans please bring them to school.
National Science Week!
Princes Hill
Primary School is participating in National Science Week 2015, 15th – 23rd
August, as a way of further promoting science in our school. Science activities
will be scheduled to run in each neighbourhood next week. We want to encourage
children to try more science at home and at school.
We also
encourage parents who are interested in science or work in a field of science
to come along and talk to the children about the work that they do. Please contact your child’s teachers to book
in a time to organize a talk, demonstration or a hands-on activity that the
children can participate in.
Thank you
for your support.

The Great Book Swap
THE GREAT BOOK SWAP
As part of Indigenous Literacy Day on Wednesday September 3, we are holding a Great Book Swap to help raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to buy books for remote indigenous communities who don’t have access to books. There are schools involved all across Australia and the target is $100,000 to buy 10,000 books.
If every child can please bring a book (or books) to school that they love but no longer want and a gold coin donation on Weds Sept 3, then they can be part of the book swap. By donating a gold coin, they can then swap their book for a new book that someone else has donated.
1. Books need to be dropped off in the gym before school starts, and the swap will happen at lunch time.
2. If you're wanting to swap more than one book, it's a gold coin for each book you want to swap. So if you swap five books, it's five coins.
3. This year if you want take home a junior book, please donate a junior book. If you want take home an older book, please donate an older book. Otherwise we end up with lots of books for little kids, but no books for the older kids.
4. Please don't donate school readers, library books, board books or really young picture books. Please just donate books you think someone will love!
See you all on Weds September 3 so we can raise money, and all have a terrific new book to take home.
